Sabrina Nangala Robinson

Born: c. 1975
People: Warlpiri
Language: Warlpiri
Area: Pikilyi

Sabrina is the 2nd of five daughters in her family, and is now in her mid 20’s. She lives near Alice Springs on the same property as her mother, well known artist Dorothy Napangardi. Sabrina has exhibited her works with other central desert artists throughout Australia.

Her mother, Dorothy is delighted that her daughter has achieved such recognition for her artwork. One of her sisters, Julie Nangala is also becoming known for her paintings. They grew up amongst artists such as Eunice Napangardi, Polly Napangardi Watson and their mother, Dorothy, watching them paint. Sabrina started her painting career using the traditional iconography of her ancestor’s country, but very quickly developed her own contemporary style.

Her fine dot paintings depict the landscape from an aerial perspective, and tell the stories and essence of her ‘Jukurrpa’ or ‘Dreamings’ which she has received through her heritage. She paints about her father’s country, and her mother’s traditional country. Her father’s country is near Pirinyanu. It is an area of rocky outcrops and deep water springs. Her mother is from the Warlpiri clan, coming from the southern edge of the Tanami Desert. It is a vast dry area of stretching sand hills.

With such an intense immersion in Aboriginal art since childhood, Sabrina is a new generation artist certainly worth watching, as she is likely to gain popularity in time.
